THE LAND TRUST'S GOALS?
The Orono Land Trust exists to protect and preserve a portion of our natural environment
for the benefit of all residents of Orono, Maine. In doing so, we do not seek
to halt development. We do want to balance development with the conservation of open
spaces. We feel that if such a balance is not achieved, much will be irretrievably lost to
us and to future generations.
We seek to maintain Orono's valuable trail system and open space for the citizens of
Orono and to enhance people's awareness of their values by conducting educational programs
for all ages.
HOW CAN THE LAND TRUST PRESERVE OPEN SPACES?
It can purchase land directly, accept donations of land, and acquire conservation
easements (people retain ownership of the land but give up or limit their rights of future
development).
IS THE LAND TRUST A NEW CONCEPT?
No, several land trusts are nearly 100 years old. There now about 100 land trusts in Maine in
2006 and many in other states.
WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT?
To encourage an active program of growth management with open space preservation in the
face of other demands as the town grows.
WHAT
ARE THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS ON THE TOWN?
Taxable development will continue. The Orono Land Trust's goal is to insure that
development is balanced and enhanced by open spaces. Maintenance of Orono's character
through careful planning benefits the economy of the entire town. |
